I recently attended Spirit & Place Festival's Public Conversation. (If you've never been, I encourage you to check it out.) This year's topic was "Inspiring Places" and the speakers included former Indianapolis mayor, Bill Hudnut, and current Braddock, Pennsylvania mayor, John Fetterman. The two men are about as opposite as they come, but each have made remarkable impacts in their communities.
Most of the conversation centered on what inspired them as it related to their community involvement. They spoke about challenges in their careers, differences in their communities, and... read on
It's interesting comparing PR and advertising classes to actually working in the industry. I find myself reviewing the theories that help to create successful campaigns, while at the same time getting to see these very principles put into action at TrendyMinds. I have also found myself noticing stalled campaigns of companies in the news that fail to practice the basics of PR. It seems that many practitioners lose touch with the basics after spending many years in that work force. The following examples (a personal story and a national matter) display the need for a refresher course on... read on
It was 3:30 AM as I boarded a plane to Jacmel, Haiti. What I didn’t know in the dark of that morning was that Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, would teach me more about public relations than any American setting ever could.
Previously, I thought public relations was a set of things to do-- a phone call to make, an email to send, a meeting to attend. It was having a client, fulfilling his or her needs and doing whatever needed to be done in between. Haiti proved me quite wrong.
As a non-medical volunteer on a medical mission, I was appointed "clinic secretary." My... read on
Recently I had the opportunity to take a vacation to Greece. If you've never been, I encourage you to place the country on the top of your travel list. The people are friendly, the islands are beautiful, the history is rich, and the food is delicious.
On our last evening in Mykonos (which also happened to be my partner's 37th birthday), we sought out a tasty place to dine and asked the front desk clerk at our hotel for some help. Sale & Pepper (or "Salt & Pepper" as we thought it was called) is a little Italian restaurant on the island of Mykonos. Tucked away in the Laka district of Hora,... read on
Is it me, or are some agencies still trying to use tactics from the 60's in order to strong arm clients into doing business with them? The old ways of business have definitely changed and some groups haven't quite grasped the new concepts. While some may argue that we're an "older agency" because we are almost 15, we're definitely not over-the-hill in our methods. (However, we wouldn't mind bringing back the 3 martini lunches!)
Recently, we learned about two separate incidents with some of our "elder" competitors (who shall remain nameless). In both situations, these companies went to the... read on
When evaluating potential employees for our company, it can be a challenge to find the right fit both in personality and skill set. It's something we struggle with whenever we find a candidate with awesome skills but a lacking personality, or, on the flip side, a candidate who is a perfect fit for the office but doesn't quite have the skills we need. Do we go for a sharp person with a great personality who knows the basics, or do you choose the socially awkward person who is a genius?
In some positions personality is the most important factor due to the amount of interaction the position... read on
Is it me, or does it seem like many individuals are trying to justify their professional existences lately? From Countess LuAnn de Lesseps of Bravo's "Real Housewives of NYC" trying to convince others that she (and her title) is an important cornerstone to the New York social scene, or the guy down the street saying he can bring you thousands of new customers if you'll use his newly formed Internet company, everywhere I look it seems like people are shouting their own praises to the world.
Perhaps it has something to do with the shaky economic platform (or shaky marriage, as may be the... read on
Within the last year or so, there has been a groundswell of social media. This form of communication was never a hot topic in my classes, it was still too new. Sure, it had been brought up in a few discussions here or there, but never anything in-depth because it hadn’t quite caught on yet. Now, it is a force to be reckoned with in the ever changing world of communications and I’ve been lucky enough to be right in the middle of the action. I have experienced first-hand how important social media is becoming an important tool and have learned how companies can utilize it to promote their... read on
