In just one short month, the TrendyMinds staff will be heading to Austin, Texas for the biggest, baddest industry conference around, the place where everybody who’s anybody in the industry will be -- South by Southwest (or, as the cool kids call it, SXSW).
Part nerd prom, part industry conference and part "scene to be seen," SXSW is arguably the most influential industry gathering of its kind. With the big names in the business like Pete Cashmore (Mashable), Evan Williams (Twitter) and Ben Huh (CEO of Pet Holding Inc, which brought the world some of the most viral blog we’ve seen like... read on
Printing is kind of like the English language -- very confusing with rules that change under different circumstances. I'm constantly being asked what the difference is and why the costs are so vastly different so I thought I'd write a post to clear it all up.
You can never go wrong printing with offset... unless you have a tight budget. Offset is the most pricey because it's such an extensive process. The press is enormous -- imagine a machine (much like the illustration) that is so big it only fits in a large warehouse. Each different station prints a different color. The colors... read on
With a new year just around the corner, I felt compelled to take a look at what 2009 has brought and preview the year to come. The recession has played a tiny role in the way business has been conducted over the past few years. Okay, so maybe a bit more than a tiny role; the recession has greatly altered the business environment, and the pros and cons have been and will continually be argued in the time to come.
Not since the Great Depression has American seen such a large drop in advertising spending. According to Publicis Groupes' ZenithOptimedia mentioned in Adage.com, 2010 is... read on
Yes, I'm a 35-year-old brace face. Call me tinsel teeth, railroad tracks, Ugly Betty, whatever! (Even my dentist teases me.) I can handle the jokes as I've been through it before. You see, this isn't my first bout with braces. I've had them once before - during my freshman year of college.
I've been seeing Sondhi Biggs on the north side. They are amazing. The technology they use is unbelievable. They have X-rays, photo progression charts, computer models that plot each tooth's movement, and a lot of other technology that I won't even attempt to act like I understand. Suffice it to say,... read on
I recently attended Spirit & Place Festival's Public Conversation. (If you've never been, I encourage you to check it out.) This year's topic was "Inspiring Places" and the speakers included former Indianapolis mayor, Bill Hudnut, and current Braddock, Pennsylvania mayor, John Fetterman. The two men are about as opposite as they come, but each have made remarkable impacts in their communities.
Most of the conversation centered on what inspired them as it related to their community involvement. They spoke about challenges in their careers, differences in their communities, and... read on
Do you harness or reject new technologies? The Internet is advancing so quickly that it's often hard to keep up -- and intimidating to conquer. Many people already cannot fully grasp the job functions of PR, so these new technologies further cloud our work. I have friends who have no idea what I do on a daily basis because they are so oblivious to the ways new technologies can be professionally implemented.
"You're a professional blogger."
"How can you spend so much time on your phone?"
"Oh PR! So you sit around and tweet all day right?"
Yes-I do love my phone, and yes, I tweet,... read on
It was 3:30 AM as I boarded a plane to Jacmel, Haiti. What I didn’t know in the dark of that morning was that Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, would teach me more about public relations than any American setting ever could.
Previously, I thought public relations was a set of things to do-- a phone call to make, an email to send, a meeting to attend. It was having a client, fulfilling his or her needs and doing whatever needed to be done in between. Haiti proved me quite wrong.
As a non-medical volunteer on a medical mission, I was appointed "clinic secretary." My... read on
If there is one bit of knowledge that I brought home from the SXSW conference, it was to not settle on good ideas, but to brainstorm until your ideas are great! Most of the time we think our first idea is the only idea. We don't bother brainstorming to make sure there aren't any better options out there. If we think things through before executing, we're more likely to create something better than what already exists, which in turn gains attention!
Not sure what I'm talking about? Here are some cool examples:

Everyone has a blog these days with posts of... read on
