The month of January was a busy one for the TrendyMinds video crew. We completed 20 video shoots in 30 calendar days. From VIP parties for “The Big Game” to operating rooms, every location had its own challenges. And between CEOs and surgeons, things could have gotten tricky. Below are a few things that ensured each video shoot was successful and efficient – a goal for any project. While a few of these points may seem like no brainers, it’s important they not be forgotten.
-
You might get off schedule. So be flexible. While your time is important, the star of the video’s time is more important. By being accommodating and cognizant of their time, you will have a happier person to shoot and get a better end result.
-
Equipment might break. Bring backups for what you can. And bring a backup plan for what you can’t. Sometimes you may have to think on your feet.
-
Not everyone is born a star. Some interviewees are going to be better than others. Be patient. Loosen the person up, limit the number of people watching, and act as a soundboard for framing their response. If all else fails, introduce booze. (kidding. …sort of)
-
Something’s gotta give. Know the client’s priorities. Is it more important to have an interesting background, good lighting or quality sound? Sometimes the situation won’t allow for all three. Prioritizing will help you make decisions.
-
Keep the client in the room. While you may know your client like the home screen of your iPhone, they will be the one critiquing the final product. If possible, it’s best if they are on-hand to ensure messaging and visuals are within brand standards.
These are just a start. By nature, video shoots are unpredictable – like many projects. So be prepared for some fun! What pointers can you share for keeping things on track?
