I know that the title of this post is a bit "PTL Club meets Dr. Dobson," but I assure you I'm not talking church today. That, my friends, I'm saving for another day. (After I've had a few glasses of wine and am ready to rant.) Instead, I've decided to share my thoughts on the many different players (or playas for some of you) that are stakeholders in business.

In recent weeks I've heard gossip, read stories, examined tweets and talked about various businesses in Indianapolis. All of these businesses (or individuals) have some service to sell or a product to pedal.  But, is someone who "designs websites" the same as someone who "designs websites"? Confused?  Don't be.

In any industry you will find people offering what may appear to be the same service, but in fact the two have vastly different skill sets. You'll see dynamic people with many years of experience and you'll see dynamic people with only a couple of years experience. The difference comes in the type of work they produce. While both may produce quality work (depending on who is judging), both may have vastly different prices.

For example, some experienced web design shops may sell websites for $50,000 and up. Does it mean they are "ripping off" their clients? No. In fact, HELL NO! What is important is that they have a lot of experience and are able to craft sites that fit specific needs. Most times these are needs that are discovered by the web design firm. Someone who doesn't have the same level of experience may never have found these needs.

Now, that isn't to say the new guy to the game is a joke. It just means that he (or she) just needs more practice. This comes in the form of working on smaller projects and working up their way up the ladder.

So, big players - don't make fun of the little guys. They are eating their Wheaties and may one day (soon) kick your ass. And small guys, don't be ankle biters and say the big players are sharks. Try to learn from some of the experienced players in the field. It's okay to admit that you don't know EVERYTHING, even if you have thousands of friends on Facebook or have an army of Twitter followers.

Realize that there is plenty to go around and everyone will get a seat at the table, just maybe not at the head of the table. Those come with time, experience or extremely lucky breaks.

Hi,
