There's no doubt that joining a professional organization is beneficial to one’s career development. These organizations can help you clean up your resume, find a job, match you with continuing education opportunities, provide you with a way to socialize and network with industry peers and more. Being active in a professional organization gives you credibility, connections and, perhaps most importantly, an opportunity to shape your industry. But with a responsibility that great, one has to wonder if these organizations are too generous with their membership requirements.

I recently saw a tweet about Google's latest logo design. Before even clicking the link, I was excited to see it. Based on other clever Google logo alterations I'd seen, I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed. When the feet of my favorite childhood character, Big Bird, popped up on my screen, a huge smile flooded my face. I was so happy that I made the visit. Since then, I've been loading the Google page to search instead of using the form in the upper right hand corner just to see if there is a new design that... read on

So, the newest discovery in advertising/marketing today appears to be the trust factor? Yep, it is new. You may think you've heard about trust before, but no, you haven't. At least not in the way that some social media experts would like to make you feel you haven't.

While it may be true that your words can spread quicker and that you have the ability to interact with people on a grander scale, getting people to trust you is not a new concept. While the issue of trust could go back to the dawn of time, I'll share my experience with trust as it relates to part of my "business" past.

Back... read on

I know that the title of this post is a bit "PTL Club meets Dr. Dobson," but I assure you I'm not talking church today. That, my friends, I'm saving for another day. (After I've had a few glasses of wine and am ready to rant.) Instead, I've decided to share my thoughts on the many different players (or playas for some of you) that are stakeholders in business.

In recent weeks I've heard gossip, read stories, examined tweets and talked about various businesses in Indianapolis. All of these businesses (or individuals) have some service to sell or a product to pedal. But, is someone who... read on

I recently attended Spirit & Place Festival's Public Conversation. (If you've never been, I encourage you to check it out.) This year's topic was "Inspiring Places" and the speakers included former Indianapolis mayor, Bill Hudnut, and current Braddock, Pennsylvania mayor, John Fetterman. The two men are about as opposite as they come, but each have made remarkable impacts in their communities.

Most of the conversation centered on what inspired them as it related to their community involvement. They spoke about challenges in their careers, differences in their communities, and... read on

Do you harness or reject new technologies? The Internet is advancing so quickly that it's often hard to keep up -- and intimidating to conquer. Many people already cannot fully grasp the job functions of PR, so these new technologies further cloud our work. I have friends who have no idea what I do on a daily basis because they are so oblivious to the ways new technologies can be professionally implemented.

"You're a professional blogger."
"How can you spend so much time on your phone?"
"Oh PR! So you sit around and tweet all day right?"

Yes-I do love my phone, and yes, I tweet,... read on

It's hard to believe that it's already been four months since I joined the TrendyMinds team. It seems like it was only a few weeks ago that I made the move from my job with a large advertising agency in Louisville to our full service, boutique office in Indianapolis.

From the moment I walked through the front door, I have been able to participate and contribute my skills and knowledge on a variety of public relations and interactive projects. I can say, without a doubt, that TrendyMinds has offered more opportunities for participating on client projects and increasing my familiarity... read on

It's interesting comparing PR and advertising classes to actually working in the industry. I find myself reviewing the theories that help to create successful campaigns, while at the same time getting to see these very principles put into action at TrendyMinds. I have also found myself noticing stalled campaigns of companies in the news that fail to practice the basics of PR. It seems that many practitioners lose touch with the basics after spending many years in that work force. The following examples (a personal story and a national matter) display the need for a refresher course on... read on
